A DVLA cardiology assessment is a set of heart tests plus a consultant review that gives the DVLA the clinical information it needs to assess your fitness to drive. Initial consultation: A member of our clinical team measures your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, height and weight, and asks you to complete a lifestyle questionnaire. Your consultant then reviews these results, explores your medical history and recommends the appropriate diagnostic tests.
Diagnostic tests: The recommended tests are carried out at our Leeds or Sheffield clinic.
Cardiologist review and DVLA paperwork: The expert cardiologists at The South Yorkshire Heart Centre review your results and complete the relevant DVLA paperwork - prepared once all your results are reviewed - for you to share with the DVLA.
Follow-up: Your consultant discusses your results with you and, if a heart issue is found, talks you through the options and the next steps.
You must tell the DVLA about certain medical conditions, including many heart conditions, because they can affect your driving - and the DVLA, not your doctor, decides whether you can keep your licence [1]. The DVLA assesses a wide range of cardiovascular conditions - from arrhythmias and heart failure to conditions treated with pacemakers, stents or bypass surgery - against published medical standards [2].
