MRI Scanning

An MRI scan uses strong magnets and radio waves to create images of the inside of the body. Doctors can use MRI scans to see the brain, heart, internal organs, spine, joints, and other areas to monitor and diagnose conditions.

How an MRI scan works

MRI aligns protons in the body’s water molecules using strong magnetic fields.

The machine captures the signals and creates detailed images of the body.

What Can an MRI Scan Be Used For

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of internal body structures. It is commonly used for:

  • Diagnosing issues in soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
  • Assessing brain and spinal cord abnormalities.
  • Detecting joint and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Evaluating heart and vascular problems.
  • Monitoring the progress of certain medical treatments.

MRI scans are non-invasive and provide high-resolution images, making them invaluable for detecting even the smallest abnormalities.

What to expect when receiving an MRI scan

Before the Appointment

You’ll fill out a health questionnaire before the scan to alert the doctor of any precautions, conditions, or metals in the body. Let the hospital know if you’re pregnant, have metal implants, or have a pacemaker. Keep jewellery at home and wear comfortable clothes without any metal, such as zips and buttons.

You’ll need to remove dentures and piercings. Your doctor will also tell you if you need to fast, drink plenty of water, or have contrast before the scan.

During the Appointment

You’ll lie on a bed that moves into a cylindrical MRI scanner. The radiographer will move into another room to operate the scanner, but you can talk to them through the intercom. They’ll watch you from a television monitor and the viewing window throughout your scan. The machine is loud, and you’ll have headphones to listen to the radio or earplugs to block the sound.

The appointment lasts 15 to 90 minutes. You’ll need to lie still for the radiographer to get a clear image.

Risks and Complications

MRI scans are generally very safe with no radiation involved.

How to recover following an MRI scan

After an MRI scan, you can go home right away. If you had a sedative, you need to rest and have someone take you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
