Overview

What is an ECG?

An ECG is an important sports screening test. The results show how healthy a heart is and how it reacts to exercise.

How an ECG works

An ECG measures the heart's activity at rest, over time, or while exercising. The ECG machine measures and interprets the results.

What to expect from an ECG

You’ll remove the clothes on your body's top half at a resting ECG appointment. You’ll lie on a bed, and the healthcare professional will attach electrodes to various body parts. You’ll lie still while the ECG records the signals from your heartbeat. This takes a few minutes.

You’ll take your clothes off the top half of your body at an exercise ECG. The healthcare professional will attach electrodes to your chest. You’ll then walk on a treadmill or cycle on an exercise bike, starting slowly and gradually increasing your effort. This usually lasts 40-60 minutes. If you’re having an exercise ECG, wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and avoid eating a heavy meal before.

The ECG test diagnoses any abnormalities in the heart rate that could indicate an underlying cardiac condition.

Risks and complications of an ECG

An ECG is considered a safe test. You may experience a slight rash where the patches were on your skin.

How to recover from an ECG

After your ECG, you’ll be able to go straight home.
