When you are living with ongoing pain, it can be difficult to think about anything else. It can leave you feeling frustrated, exhausted and low, particularly when you do not have an explanation or previous treatments have not helped. We understand that you want to be listened to, you want answers and you want them as quickly as possible.
If you don't already have a referral, a Private GP appointment is the first step.

LivingCare's consultant-led pain management specialists provide assessments at our Leeds and Sheffield clinics. Your consultation is focused on understanding your pain, how it affects your life and what you have already tried, before discussing the most appropriate next steps. A pain management consultation costs £225.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) defines chronic pain as "pain that persists or recurs for more than 3 months" [1]. It is common. In the Health Survey for England 2024, 26% of adults reported chronic pain [2].
NICE describes two kinds [1]:
The two are managed differently, so knowing which one you have matters [1]. That is why chronic pain treatment at LivingCare starts with assessment, not with a treatment chosen in advance.
It may be time to see a pain specialist if you have:
Conditions our Pain Management team sees include osteoarthritis of the knee, hip and shoulder, tendonitis and bursitis, sciatica, low back and facet joint pain, soft tissue injuries, and post-surgical and persistent pain syndromes.
For a wider introduction to the service, read Pain Management at LivingCare: What It Involves and When to See a Specialist.
Chronic pain treatment begins with a Pain Management Consultation with one of our Musculoskeletal Radiologists or Pain Management Consultants.
If you don't already have a referral, a Private GP appointment is the first step, unless your pain is in your spine, which can be booked directly.
Assessment. You'll be asked about your pain and its impact on your life, past injuries, the treatment you have tried and the tests you've had.
Examination. Your consultant uses a physical exam and your medical history to understand where your pain may be coming from, and whether further tests are needed to find out.
Your plan. Your consultant creates a bespoke plan, built on what the assessment finds.
Your individual care plan may include advice, medication changes, interventions, further tests, and referrals to other specialists. We can also offer support and guidance to help you stop ineffective medication, or medication that may cause long-term harm.
Injections are not the starting point for every kind of chronic pain. Where your consultant finds a specific source - a particular joint or nerve, for example - they may discuss targeted options such as Pain Injection Treatments or Radiofrequency Treatments, and can organise referrals for injection clinics and radiofrequency treatments. If surgery or further treatment is needed, we can organise referrals.
If your pain centres on one area, see Spine Pain Treatment and Knee Pain Treatment.
Before your appointment. Provide details of your symptoms, treatments and any relevant investigations. Bring any imaging or assessment details with you to help your consultant understand your condition.
During your appointment. Your consultant talks through your history, examines you and explains the management options that may suit you.
After your appointment. You'll have a bespoke treatment plan. If you need injections, imaging or additional tests, you can make arrangements for them. You may need a follow-up to monitor your response and make any adjustments.

Not necessarily. Your plan depends on what your assessment finds, and may include advice, medication changes, further tests or a referral to another specialist. Injections and radiofrequency are options a consultant may consider where a specific source of pain has been found.
