Extended heart rhythm monitoring provides a comprehensive assessment of cardiac electrical activity during normal daily activities, detecting intermittent problems that brief tests might miss.
A 24-72 hour ECG monitoring test, also known as Holter monitoring, is used to continuously record your heart’s electrical activity over 24-72 hours to detect irregularities that might not show up during a brief ECG in a clinic. It's often used to diagnose arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms), investigate unexplained symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, or fainting, and monitor the effectiveness of heart medications or pacemakers.
You wear small electrodes on your chest connected to a portable device that records your heartbeat as you go about your normal activities. This test provides a more complete picture of your heart’s rhythm and can help identify issues that occur intermittently.
Small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest and connected to a lightweight, portable recording device worn on a belt, or a strap, around your waist. The device continuously monitors and records your heart's electrical activity, allowing you go about your normal daily activities. You'll also keep a detailed diary of activities, symptoms, and the time they occur to help correlate heart rhythm changes with your experiences.
Before Your Appointment: You'll receive the monitoring device and instructions on its use. The chest area may be shaved and cleaned to ensure good electrode contact. You'll be shown how to keep a symptom diary and what activities to avoid during monitoring.
During Your Monitoring Period: Continue normal daily activities except bathing or showering - the device must stay dry. Keep a detailed diary noting activities, symptoms, and times. The device records continuously, storing all heart rhythm data for later analysis by specialists.
After Your Monitoring Period: Return the device to the clinic where technicians will download and analyse the recorded data. Your cardiologist will review the results alongside your symptom diary to identify any correlations between heart rhythm changes and your symptoms.
This monitoring is entirely safe with no associated risks. Some electrodes may cause mild skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals - inform staff if you have sensitive skin. The device is waterproof to splashing but cannot be fully submerged. There are no electrical risks as the device only records heart signals without sending any electricity to your body.
No recovery time is needed as this is an entirely non-invasive monitoring procedure. Remove electrodes carefully to avoid skin irritation. Resume all normal activities immediately including bathing and swimming. Results are typically available within a few days, and your healthcare provider will discuss findings and any necessary treatment adjustments or follow-up monitoring.

24-72 hour ECG Monitoring is a test where you wear a small portable device called a Holter monitor that records your heart’s electrical activity continuously for 1 to 3 days. It helps detect irregular heart rhythms that might not show up during a short ECG.
During the 24-72 Hour ECG Monitoring, keep a diary of your activities and any symptoms you experience, noting the time they occur. This helps your consultant correlate the heart rhythm recordings with your symptoms.
Following the completion of the 24-72 Hour ECG Monitoring, and when you have returned the monitor, your consultant or technician will analyse the data. Your consultant will discuss results with you at a follow-up appointment.
