Overview

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy uses extreme cold (-196°C) to destroy abnormal tissues such as warts, actinic keratosis, and early-stage skin cancers1. Once cryotherapy has destroyed the abnormal cells, healthy cells and tissues can replace them. The medical therapy is also used for chronic pain to interrupt the pain signals.

As this is a quick and minimally invasive procedure, you will recover quickly and can return to normal activities.

When You Should Consider Cryotherapy

Our consultants typically recommend cryotherapy for:

  • Warts and verrucas
  • Seborrheic warts
  • Basal cell carcinomas
  • Sun damage
  • Fleshy growths

How Cryotherapy Works

Using the cold temperatures of liquid nitrogen, clinicians can freeze and destroy abnormal cells. The specialists use either a cotton swab or spray to apply the liquid nitrogen to the affected area.

Your clinician will assess the affected area and confirm whether cryotherapy is the most suitable treatment. The cryotherapy procedure involves applying liquid nitrogen to the area using a spray or a cotton swab. This can cause stinging or burning during application.

What to Expect When Receiving Cryotherapy

Before your appointment: Make sure the area is easy for the clinician to access.

During your appointment: The procedure is very quick. You may experience some discomfort during the appointment.

After your appointment: You can go straight home.

Risks and Complications of Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is considered a safe treatment. However, it is important to be aware of any complications and side effects.

  • More than one treatment may be required if the abnormal cells are not destroyed
  • Rarely, a scar may form
  • Pigmentation changes
  • Swelling, scabbing, and blistering of the treatment site

Your clinician will explain how to care for the area to ensure optimal healing and discuss any concerns you may have.
