Overview

Skin tags are small, soft growths that hang from the skin.

They are extremely common and harmless. Skin tags often develop in areas where skin rubs together, such as the neck, armpits, groin and under the breasts.

Although harmless, skin tags can become irritated by shaving, jewellery or clothing.

What Causes Skin Tags?

The exact cause is not always clear, but skin tags are more common:

  • With increasing age
  • During pregnancy
  • In areas of friction
  • In people with obesity or diabetes

When Should a Skin Tag Be Assessed?

Assessment may be appropriate if a skin tag:

  • Becomes painful or irritated
  • Bleeds repeatedly
  • Changes in appearance
  • Causes cosmetic concern
  • Is difficult to distinguish from another type of lesion

Treatment Options

LivingCare provides surgical removal of skin tags under local anaesthetic or treatment with cryotherapy where appropriate.

Some skin tags do not require treatment.
