Warts and Verrucas

Overview

Warts are common skin growths caused by human papillomavirus, also known as HPV. Not the same subtypes of HPV that is associated with cervical cancer.

Verrucas are warts that develop on the soles of the feet. They can become painful because of pressure from walking or standing.

Warts are contagious and can spread through direct contact or shared surfaces.

Symptoms of Warts and Verrucas

Symptoms can include:

  • Rough raised skin growths
  • Small black dots within the lesion
  • Pain when walking in the case of verrucas
  • Thickened skin on the feet
  • Multiple clustered lesions

How Warts and Verrucas Are Treated

Many warts resolve naturally over time without treatment.

Persistent or uncomfortable lesions may benefit from treatment.
