Uterine Fibroids

Overview

What are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas) are non-cancerous growths made of muscle and fibrous tissue. They develop within or around the uterus and can vary in size from very small to much larger growths. According to NICE, they are the most common benign uterine tumours in women of reproductive age.

Fibroids are not cancer, and having them doesn’t increase the risk of uterine cancer.  Depending on size and location, fibroids can cause unwelcome symptoms.

At LivingCare, we provide specialist fibroid diagnosis and management, tailoring your care to your symptoms and individual needs.

How Treatment for Uterine Fibroids Works

Your journey with LivingCare starts with a detailed consultation aimed at understanding your symptoms, medical history and any future pregnancy plans.

To diagnose the condition, you may have a pelvic examination, an ultrasound scan, or an MRI. A detailed assessment helps determine the size, number, and position of fibroids. Based on the findings, the clinician will recommend a personalised plan.

Not all fibroids need treatment. If symptoms are mild, your specialist may suggest close monitoring.

If you need treatment, options can include:

Medication
Medication can help control heavy bleeding or reduce fibroid size in some cases.

Minimally invasive procedures
Certain procedures can shrink or remove fibroids without major surgery.

Surgical treatment
For larger or more symptomatic fibroids, your clinician may recommend surgical options. This could include removal of the fibroids (myomectomy) or, in some cases, hysterectomy.

Your specialist can explain the benefits and risks of each option and help you decide on the most appropriate approach.

What Can Uterine Fibroid Treatment Be Used For?

Treatment for uterine fibroids helps control symptoms and complications:

  • Heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Painful periods
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Abdominal swelling or bloating
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Recurrent miscarriage

Heavy bleeding may lead to iron-deficiency anaemia, causing fatigue and low energy.

What to Expect When Receiving Uterine Fibroid Treatment in Sheffield and Leeds

Before Your Appointment
Prepare information about your symptoms, menstrual history and general health. Any previous scans or test results can help support your assessment.

During Your Appointment
Your clinician will carry out a complete evaluation, which may include a pelvic examination and referral for an ultrasound or MRI.

After Your Appointment
Your clinician will give you a clear diagnosis and a treatment plan. They will also arrange any subsequent appointments for monitoring your condition and response to treatment.

Risks and Complications of Uterine Fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous but can cause ongoing symptoms if left untreated.

Complications may include heavy bleeding, anaemia, pressure symptoms or fertility challenges.

Your specialist can explain any possible risks and guide you through the most appropriate management options.

How to Recover Following Uterine Fibroid Treatment

Recovery depends on your treatment.

For conservative or medical management, you can usually continue normal activities. If you need a procedure or surgery, your clinician will provide clear guidance to support your recovery and return to daily life.
