Before Your Appointment
No special preparation is usually required before hyaluronic acid injections. It can be helpful to bring any previous scans or imaging results and to have a clear idea of how long your symptoms have been present and which activities are most affected by joint pain. During Your Appointment
The procedure typically takes around 15–30 minutes. Once the skin has been cleaned and prepared, a local anaesthetic may be used to improve comfort. Ultrasound guidance is then used to accurately place the needle within the joint before the hyaluronic acid injection is delivered. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort, but the procedure is generally well tolerated.
After Your Appointment
After the injection, you may be asked to rest briefly in the clinic. It is common to experience temporary pain, warmth, redness or swelling in the treated joint for 24–48 hours. During this time, strenuous activity should be avoided, although light daily activities can usually be resumed as comfort allows.
Hyaluronic acid injections are generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include temporary swelling, stiffness, bruising or discomfort around the joint.
Complications such as infection or allergic reaction are rare. Any individual risks will be discussed with you before treatment.
Recovery is usually straightforward. Most people return to normal daily activities within one to two days. Symptom improvement may develop gradually, with maximum benefit often seen four to six weeks after treatment.
