Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM)
Dr Sam Thistleton is a consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM). His areas of expertise include musculoskeletal problems and rehabilitation from injury, as well as medical problems and symptoms relating to sport and exercise e.g. concussion, cardiac screening, breathlessness, and undue fatigue. He is passionate about enabling all patients - from professional athletes to first-time exercisers - to enjoy the benefits of physical activity and helping them overcome barriers to this.
He also works as an SEM consultant for a Premier League football academy, a Women’s Super League women’s football team, a Championship men’s first team, and The FA. He strives to carry over the multidisciplinary approach and attention to detail from elite settings to clinic patients.
Having previously worked in acute hospital medicine, he is interested in the prevention and treatment of cardiac arrest in sport and continues to direct and instruct on Advanced Life Support courses for The Resus Council UK. This ties neatly with his interest in medical education; he also teaches clinicians to employ motivational interviewing techniques promoting healthy behaviour change in patients, on Moving Medicine’s “Active Conversations” course. He is also a qualified personal trainer.
