Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon
Jim Tiernan is a Consultant Colorectal andGeneral Surgeon based in Leeds. He graduated from theUniversity of Sheffield Medical School in 2004 and undertook his surgical training throughout Yorkshire prior to being awarded the Gold Medal fo outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons consultant examination.He followed this with a one-year fellowship in the USA in advanced colorectalsurgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. During his training he also under took a PhD in nano-biotechnology, developing an intra-operative imaging system for minimally invasive colorectal cancer resection, leading to multiple publications and prizes. He helped lead a national trial into surgical treatments for haemorrhoids, which was published in The Lancet and for which he won the BJS Best Paper prize at the European Society of Coloproctology.
His sub-specialty interest is in pelvic exenteration for advanced/recurrent pelvic cancer but also treats colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and proctological conditions.
He is the Chair of the Research and AuditCommittee for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, and Surgical Lead for the Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Clinical Research Network. He is also an elected member of the ACPGBI Advanced Cancer Committee, and DeputyTPD for Yorkshire & Humber Higher Surgical Training.
