Mr Jim Tiernan

Mr Jim Tiernan is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based in Leeds. He graduated from the University of Sheffield Medical School in 2004 and undertook his surgical training throughout Yorkshire prior to being awarded the Gold Medal for outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons consultant examination. He followed this with a one-year fellowship in the USA in advanced colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. During his training, he also undertook a PhD in nano-biotechnology, developing an intra-operative imaging system for minimally invasive colorectal cancer resection, leading to multiple publications and prizes. He helped lead a national trial into surgical treatments for haemorrhoids, which was published in The Lancet and for which he won the BJS Best Paper Prize at the European Society of Coloproctology.

Mr Tiernan’s sub-specialty interest is in pelvic exenteration for advanced/recurrent pelvic cancer but also treats colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and proctological conditions.

He is the Chair of the Research and Audit Committee for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, and Surgical Lead for the Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Clinical Research Network. He is also an elected member of the ACPGBI Advanced Cancer Committee, and Deputy TPD for Yorkshire & Humber Higher Surgical Training.
