Consultant Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist

Dr Nick Burr is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and expert Endoscopist based in Yorkshire, providing specialist private care for patients with digestive and bowel symptoms. Originally from Yorkshire, he has built his consultant career in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area.
He has particular expertise in colonoscopy, bowel cancer screening and prevention through advanced polyp removal, and inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis). He performs the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy), and manages conditions affecting both the upper and lower digestive tract — from reflux and abdominal pain to complex inflammatory and cancer-related disease.
Dr Burr takes a thorough and structured approach to assessment, ensuring symptoms are properly investigated and clearly explained. His focus is on reaching an accurate diagnosis promptly and delivering a clear, evidence-based treatment plan tailored to the individual.
He studied Biology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne before completing his medical degree at the University of East Anglia. He then returned home to undertake a specialist gastroenterology research fellowship in Leeds, where he completed his MD focusing on colorectal cancer risk in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Since then, he has combined clinical practice with academic and leadership responsibilities across the Leeds and Wakefield regions.
Dr Burr remains actively involved in research, with particular interests in endoscopy quality, bowel cancer prevention and IBD outcomes, and he has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, reviews and book chapters.
In his NHS practice at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, he served as Clinical Lead for Endoscopy Services and Gastroenterology Research. He leads service development, quality assurance and training across the endoscopy unit, helping to shape regional standards of care.
Dr Burr’s clinical work includes advanced therapeutic endoscopy, with particular expertise in complex and advanced colorectal polypectomy. This includes the removal of large or technically challenging polyps using minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, helping many patients avoid major surgery. He also provides specialist care in inflammatory bowel disease and general gastroenterology, working within multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, high-quality care for both routine and complex digestive conditions.
Nationally, he is Clinical Lead for the National Endoscopy Database (NED), a UK-wide quality improvement programme that uses real-world data to enhance the safety, effectiveness and training standards of digestive endoscopy. Internationally, Dr Burr serves as Chair of the World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO) Sub-Committee on Post-Colonoscopy Colorectal Cancer (PCCRC), leading global collaboration to improve colonoscopy quality and reduce the risk of cancers occurring after colonoscopy.
Through his clinical leadership, research and patient care, he is committed to advancing standards in digestive health and early cancer detection, while ensuring every patient receives expert, considered and personalised care.
