Cardiac Blood Tests

Overview

Comprehensive blood analysis provides crucial information about cardiovascular risk factors and overall heart health, helping guide prevention and treatment strategies.

What are Cardiac Blood Tests?

Blood tests can help monitor cardiovascular health by identifying key risk factors. A Full Blood Count (FBC) can detect anaemia or inflammation that may strain the heart. Liver Function Tests (LFTs) assess how well the liver processes fats, which impacts cholesterol levels. A Lipid Profile and Cholesterol test measures fat levels in the blood, helping assess the risk of heart disease or stroke. Thyroid Function Tests (TFTs) are also important, as thyroid disorders can affect heart rate, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Together, these tests give a comprehensive view of heart health and help guide prevention or treatment. Our Cardiologists may add or remove blood tests to tailor to each individual’s needs.

How Cardiac Blood Tests Work

Blood samples are collected through a simple needle insertion into a vein in your arm. They are analysed in a laboratory using sophisticated equipment to measure various markers of heart health. Tests may include cholesterol levels, markers of inflammation, blood sugar levels, thyroid hormones, and proteins that indicate heart muscle damage. Results are compared against normal reference ranges to identify potential health risks.

What to Expect When Receiving Cardiac Blood Tests

Before Your Appointment: Some tests require fasting for 9-12 hours beforehand - you'll be advised if this is necessary. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Continue taking regular medications unless specifically instructed otherwise. Wear a top that has sleeves you can roll up.

During Your Appointment: A trained phlebotomist will clean the skin and insert a small needle into a vein in your arm. You may briefly feel a sharp sensation, but the procedure takes just a few minutes. Multiple blood samples may be collected in different tubes for various tests.

After Your Appointment: Apply pressure to the puncture site and keep the area clean and dry. You can resume normal activities immediately. Results are typically available within 24-48 hours, and your healthcare provider will discuss findings and any necessary follow-up.

Risks and Complications of Cardiac Blood Tests

Blood tests are very safe with minimal risks. You may experience slight bruising or soreness at the puncture site – this will typically resolve within a few days. Some people may feel faint during or after blood collection - inform staff if you have a history of fainting. Infection at the puncture site is extremely rare when proper sterile technique is used.

How to Recover Following Cardiac Blood Tests

Keep the puncture site clean and dry for 24 hours. Avoid heavy lifting using that arm for a few hours to prevent bruising. Resume normal activities immediately unless advised otherwise. Drink plenty of fluids if you were fasting before the test. Follow any specific dietary or medication recommendations based on your results.
