Overview

What is the Visual Acuity and Colour Blindness Test

Vision plays a critical role in sports. Even minor visual impairments can affect performance without being immediately apparent. In the UK, there are over 3 million colour blind people and more than 2 million living with sight loss.

At LivingCare, we use modern equipment for visual acuity and colour blindness testing. Our tests provide reassurance or early identification of issues that may impact training, competition or daily activities.

A visual acuity test checks how clearly a person can see from a set distance. The test identifies reduced vision that may benefit from correction or further assessment.

A colour blindness test assesses the ability to distinguish between specific colours. Difficulty with colour perception can pose challenges in many sports, particularly those involving team colours, markings, or equipment.

Together, these tests help ensure athletes receive appropriate advice, support or referral if required.

How Visual Acuity and Colour Blindness Testing Works

An experienced optometrist uses modern diagnostic equipment to assess vision and eye health.

In addition to visual clarity and colour perception, the assessment may identify signs of common eye conditions, such as glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration, supporting early intervention where necessary.

What to Expect When Receiving a Visual Acuity and Colour Blindness Test in Sheffield and Leeds

Before Your Appointment
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them to the appointment. Otherwise, there is no specific preparation.

During Your Appointment
You will be seated while the optometrist asks you to read letters, numbers or symbols displayed from a distance. The optometrist may use different lenses to assess whether vision correction is needed and to determine the most appropriate prescription.

For a colour blindness test, the optometrist will ask you to read numbers on an image made up of coloured dots, or to match colours in order of their shades.

The full assessment typically takes around 20-30 minutes.

After Your Appointment
The optometrist will explain your results and advise any further support, correction or referral. You can return home immediately after your appointment.

Risks and Complications of Visual Acuity and Colour Blindness Testing

Visual acuity and colour blindness tests are safe and non-invasive. If eye drops are used, you may experience temporary blurred vision or mild light sensitivity, which usually resolves quickly.

How to Recover Following a Visual Acuity and Colour Blindness Test

No recovery time is required. If eye drops were used, try to avoid driving until your vision has fully returned to normal.
