Botox Trigger Point Injections

Overview

What is a Botox Trigger Point Injection?

Botox trigger point injections use Botulinum Toxin A (BTX-A), commonly known as Botox, to treat myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). MPS is a chronic muscle pain condition affecting 85% of the population at some point in their lifetime. It’s caused by tight, hypersensitive areas within the muscle tissue, also known as trigger points.

Trigger points develop when muscle fibres contract and lock. You may feel the pain or discomfort in the ‘knot’ or away from the trigger point. Common locations include the neck, shoulders, upper back and trapezius muscles.

When should you consider Botox Trigger Point Injections?

While physiotherapy, massage and anti-inflammatory medications are often the first line of treatment for MPS, some patients experience persistent or recurring pain that does not respond so well to these approaches. For these patients, Botox trigger point injections can offer meaningful, longer-lasting relief.

How Botox Trigger Point Injections Work in Leeds

Botox temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contraction. When injected precisely into an active trigger point, Botox interrupts the cycle of excessive muscle contraction and pain signalling, allowing the affected muscle to relax.

The highly targeted approach offers advantages over conventional trigger point injections that use local anaesthetic alone:

  • Botox may provide a more prolonged period of muscle relaxation, typically lasting three to six months
  • It addresses the underlying mechanism of the trigger point, rather than simply numbing the area
  • It may be particularly effective for patients whose pain has not responded to other treatments

The aim is for the muscle to rest and relax so it can return to normal function without the pain-and-spasm cycle.

What to Expect When Receiving Botox Trigger Point Injections

Before Your Treatment
During your consultation, one of our Pain Management Consultants will take a detailed pain history.

They’ll note the location and duration of your pain, its impact on your daily life, and any treatments you have previously tried. They’ll also review your medical history and current medications to ensure this is the right treatment for you.

Arrange transport to and from your appointment, as you shouldn’t drive immediately after the injection. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to allow easy access to the treatment area.

During Your Treatment
You’ll be an outpatient for your Botox trigger point injection and will go home the same day. The experienced consultant uses a precise clinical technique and, where appropriate, ultrasound guidance to inject small amounts of Botulinum Toxin A directly into each identified trigger point. You can have multiple trigger points treated in a single session.

Generally, the procedure is well-tolerated. You may feel mild discomfort during the injections. The treatment usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

After Your Treatment
Our healthcare team will monitor you in our recovery area for a short period before you are free to leave. Some patients experience mild soreness or tenderness at the injection sites in the days following the procedure.

Your consultant will discuss and schedule any follow-up appointments.

Risks and Complications of Botox Trigger Point Injections

Botox trigger point injections are considered safe when performed by an experienced clinical team. Serious side effects are rare. Your consultant will discuss the potential risks in detail during your consultation and answer any questions you may have before proceeding.

Side effects may include:

  • Temporary soreness, redness or bruising at the injection site
  • Mild muscle weakness in or around the treated area
  • Headache or flu-like symptoms in the short term

How to Recover Following Botox Trigger Point Injections

After your treatment, it’s best to rest and avoid any strenuous activity for 24–48 hours. Try not to massage or put pressure on the treated area straight away. If you notice any tenderness, a cool compress can help ease discomfort. You can then ease back into your normal routine, following your consultant's guidance.

The effects of Botox typically develop over the course of one to two weeks, with maximum benefit usually felt within this period. Relief commonly lasts between three and six months, after which a repeat treatment may be considered if required.
