Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring provides comprehensive assessment of blood pressure patterns throughout a full 24-hour cycle, offering more accurate diagnosis than single office measurements.
A 24-hour blood pressure test, or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), measures your blood pressure throughout the day and night while you go about your normal activities. It helps diagnose high blood pressure more accurately by detecting conditions like ‘white coat hypertension’ (high readings when at the hospital or GP surgery) or ‘masked hypertension’ (normal in hospital or GP surgery but high elsewhere). It also assesses how well blood pressure medication is working, checks for abnormal night-time readings, and helps link symptoms like dizziness or headaches to blood pressure changes. The test involves wearing a cuff and monitor for 24 hours, providing a detailed picture of your blood pressure patterns.
You wear a small automated blood pressure monitor that connects to a cuff, which is placed around your upper arm. The device automatically inflates the cuff and takes readings at regular intervals throughout the 24 hours. This is typically every 15-30 minutes during the day, and every 30-60 minutes at night. All of your readings are stored in the device's memory for later analysis by healthcare professionals.
Before Your Monitoring Period: The cuff is fitted around the upper arm and connected to a small monitoring device worn on a belt. You'll receive instructions on how to position your arm during readings and keep a diary of activities and symptoms.
During Your Monitoring Period: Continue normal daily activities while the cuff automatically inflates at preset intervals. Keep your arm still and relaxed during readings. Avoid heavy exercise or activities that might dislodge the cuff. The device may wake you briefly during the night for readings.
After Your Monitoring Period: Return the device to the clinic, where the data will be analysed. Your doctor will review the results to decide if you need treatment or changes to your current plan. A comprehensive report shows blood pressure patterns throughout the 24 hours.
This kind of monitoring is entirely safe, with no associated health risks. The cuff inflation may cause temporary discomfort or leave slight marks on your arm, but these are harmless. Some people find the night-time readings disruptive to sleep. The device should be kept dry, so you cannot shower or bathe during the monitoring period.
No recovery is needed as this is a non-invasive monitoring procedure. You can go back to all your normal activities immediately including bathing and swimming. Any marks from the cuff typically fade within hours. Results help guide treatment decisions, so follow any medication or lifestyle recommendations provided by your healthcare team.

24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring is a test where you wear a small device (a blood pressure cuff connected to a monitor) for 24 hours to measure blood pressure at intervals throughout the day and night.
The 24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring test helps consultants get a complete picture of your blood pressure, including during sleep and daily activities. It is helpful to monitor your blood pressure readings if they are high or inconsistent, or to check if your medications are working well.
Yes, you can go about your usual routine whilst having a 24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring, but try to keep your arm still when the cuff inflates. Avoid heavy exercise or activities that could dislodge the cuff.
Following the 24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring test you will return the device to the clinic, where the data will be analysed. Your consultant reviews the results with you to decide if you need treatment or changes to your current plan.
