LivingCare provides consultant-led concussion assessment and management in Sheffield and Leeds, offering rapid access to specialist care for individuals following a head injury. Our bespoke concussion pathways support professional and semi-professional athletes, as well as anyone experiencing ongoing symptoms after a concussion.

A concussion happens when forces transmitted through the brain (e.g. from a blow to the head) causes the brain to move. It is an injury commonly associated with contact and collision sports, but it can also occur during other accidents.
A concussion affects brain function rather than causing structural damage that is visible on scans. Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, confusion, memory difficulties, sensitivity to light or noise, sleep problems and mood changes. These symptoms can appear immediately or develop gradually over the following hours or days.
Why do concussions matter? In England and Wales, over 1 million people a year attend emergency departments with a recent head injury. Concussion is said to account for 5-10% of all sport-related injuries. Post-concussion symptoms can be mistaken for other problems – so having a dedicated sports concussion assessment is essential.
While many people recover fully within a short period, others experience ongoing or complex symptoms.
LivingCare offers private concussion assessment in Sheffield and Leeds, led by Consultants in Sports and Exercise Medicine, to ensure accurate diagnosis, safe recovery, and evidence-based return-to-activity decisions.
You’ll begin with an Initial Specialist Assessment. A Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine will discuss your medical history, review symptoms, and provide neurological and cognitive assessments.
After the assessment, you may need Diagnostic Support. If clinically indicated, patients may be referred for advanced imaging, such as MRI or CT, or referral for vestibular, balance, or neuropsychological assessment to explore specific symptoms in more detail.
We continue to support you through evidence-based management.
Each patient receives an individualised recovery plan based on current clinical guidelines. This plan provides clear advice on symptom monitoring, physical and cognitive rest, and a structured progression back to activity.
Concussion assessment at LivingCare supports diagnosis, recovery planning and decision-making following head injury. It can help confirm or rule out sports-related concussion, identify individuals at risk of prolonged symptoms, guide safe return-to-play decisions, and support the management of complex or repeat head injuries.
This service is suitable for professional and semi-professional athletes, teams, clubs and governing bodies, as well as individual athletes or people concerned about recent head injuries.
LivingCare has a structured and medically supervised return-to-play process for athletes. Our progression plans are based on symptom resolution, clinical findings, and consultant judgment; we prioritise athlete safety and grant clearance to return to sport only when clinically appropriate. Self-referral is available.
We support recovery through regular follow-up appointments, during which we review your progress and make any necessary adjustments. Patients have access to multidisciplinary support, including physiotherapy, neuropsychology and sports medicine expertise.
Some individuals experience symptoms that persist beyond the expected recovery period. At LivingCare, we provide specialist care for prolonged or recurrent concussion symptoms, including post-concussion syndrome. Our approach focuses on addressing contributing factors, including headaches, balance disturbances, mood changes, sleep problems, and neck-related symptoms.
LivingCare combines consultant-led expertise with rapid access to care and state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities. Our concussion pathways are evidence-based, personalised and designed to support safe return to sport. Patients can access concussion care through self-pay or private medical insurance. We can also arrange a private GP consultation and referral if required.

The concussion assessment itself is a non-invasive, low-risk process. It is based on clinical evaluation, neurological examination and symptom assessment rather than physical intervention.
Recovery time varies depending on the individual, the nature of the injury and the presence of ongoing symptoms. Many people recover within weeks, while others require longer-term monitoring and support.
The table below has multiple columns and can be scrolled horizontally on smaller screens. When viewing on mobile, this table is best viewed in landscape format.

Recovery following a concussion can vary from person to person. Factors such as the severity of the injury, previous concussions, and ongoing symptoms play a big part in the recovery timeline. Many recover within a few weeks, but others can take longer, and it is important to follow clinical guidance on what is appropriate at different stages of your recovery.
Rest is important in the early stages of recovery, but as symptoms improve, light activity can often be introduced under clinical guidance. The frequency and intensity of exercise should be increased gradually, and only if it does not worsen symptoms. LivingCare recommends a medically supervised return-to-activity plan to ensure recovery remains safe and sustainable.
