A Cardiac MRI provides the most detailed images of the heart available in clinical practice, offering high-resolution pictures without radiation exposure. This advanced imaging technique is essential for complex cardiac assessments and treatment planning.
A Cardiac MRI is a non-invasive imaging test providing detailed pictures of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. It is most commonly performed to assess heart muscle damage after a heart attack, diagnose various types of cardiomyopathy, detect heart inflammation or infections, evaluate congenital heart defects, and measure heart function and blood flow. Unlike other imaging tests, it offers high-resolution images without radiation and can use contrast to highlight scarring or inflammation. Cardiac MRI is often recommended when other tests are inconclusive or to monitor known heart conditions.
A Cardiac MRI is safe and painless. It is a scan that takes images of your heart and blood vessels using powerful magnetic fields and radio waves rather than radiation. It uses a scanner to create detailed cross-sectional images, providing comprehensive information about heart structure, function, and blood flow. Advanced computer processing converts the magnetic signals into high-resolution images for analysis.
Before Your Appointment:
Before your Cardiac MRI, please share any relevant medical history with the team and inform them if you have any metal implants or devices in your body. At the scan, please remove all electronics and debit cards from your pockets, as well as any belts, jewellery, piercings, watches, and hearing aids.
During Your Appointment:
You'll lie on a bed that moves inside a tunnel-shaped scanner. You must lie very still during the scan, which can last up to 90 minutes. The scanner is quite noisy, and you can wear earplugs to listen to music. If you have an exercise test, we will inject you with a medicine called adenosine to simulate exercise stress.
After Your Appointment:
You should be able to go home after the Cardiac MRI. However, if you have had a sedative, you should arrange transport home as you won't be able to drive. If you have had a contrast agent, drink plenty of water for 24 hours.
Cardiac MRI is one of the safest imaging procedures with no radiation exposure. There is a risk of having an allergic reaction to the contrast agent, though this is rare. Let the medical team know if you have experienced allergies to contrast agents before. Patients with certain metal implants, pacemakers, or claustrophobia may not be suitable for MRI scanning. The procedure is completely painless with no known long-term side effects.
No recovery time is needed for standard cardiac MRI procedures. You can resume normal activities immediately unless sedation was used, in which case you should rest for the remainder of the day. If contrast was administered, staying well-hydrated helps eliminate it from your system. Follow instructions provided by your clinician regarding results or follow-up appointments.

A Cardiac MRI is a safe, non-invasive scan that uses magnetic fields (not radiation) to take detailed pictures of your heart. Your consultant may order it to check for heart damage, inflammation, problems with the heart muscle or to help diagnose a heart condition more accurately.
No, the Cardiac MRI scan itself is painless. You will lie still inside a large, tube-like machine. Some people feel a bit claustrophobic, but earplugs, music, or mild sedation can help you relax. You may also receive a contrast injection through a cannula.
After the test, as long as you haven’t reacted to the contrast agent, you should be able to return to work.
The Cardiac MRI scan usually takes 30-60 minutes, depending on what your consultant is looking for. You will need to lie still and sometimes you will be asked to hold your breath for short periods while images are taken.
Yes, the Cardiac MRI is very safe for most people. It doesn’t use radiation, and the contrast dye used is typically well tolerated. However, if you have certain metal implants or devices (like pacemakers), please inform the Radiographer and they will check if it is safe for you to have the scan.
