Comprehensive cardiac MRI services to visualise and assess heart health with precision.
A Cardiac MRI is a non-invasive imaging test used to provide detailed pictures of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. It is commonly performed to assess heart muscle damage after a heart attack, diagnose various types of cardiomyopathy, detect heart inflammation or infections, evaluate congenital heart defects, and measure heart function and blood flow. Unlike other imaging tests, it offers high-resolution images without radiation and can use contrast to highlight scarring or inflammation. Cardiac MRI is often recommended when other tests are inconclusive or to monitor known heart conditions.
A Cardiac MRI is a safe and painless scan that takes images of your heart and blood vessels. From these detailed images, your consultant can detect and diagnose any conditions.
Before your Cardiac MRI, you should share any medical history with the team and let them know if you have any metal in your body. At the scan, you must remove electronics and debit cards from your pockets and remove belts, jewellery, piercings, watches, and hearing aids.
You’ll lie on a bed that moves inside a tunnel-shaped scanner. You must lie very still during the scan, which can last up to 90 minutes. The scanner is quite noisy, and you can wear earplugs to listen to music.
If you have an exercise test, we will inject you with a medicine called adenosine to stimulate the exercise effort. You may feel short of breath during this short time, but this feeling will wear off when you stop the drip.
There is a risk of having an allergic reaction to the contrast agent. Let the medical team know if you have experienced allergies with the agent before.
You should be able to go home after the Cardiac MRI. However, if you have had a sedative, you should arrange transport home as you won’t be able to drive. If you have had a contrast agent, drink plenty of water for 24 hours.

A Cardiac MRI is a safe, non-invasive scan that uses magnetic fields (not radiation) to take detailed pictures of your heart. Your doctor may order it to check for heart damage, inflammation, problems with the heart muscle, or to help diagnose a heart condition more accurately.
No, the scan itself is painless. You’ll lie still inside a large, tube-like machine. Some people feel a bit claustrophobic, but earplugs, music, or mild sedation can help you relax. You may also receive a contrast injection through a cannula.
After the test, as long as you haven’t reacted to the contrast agent, you should be able to return to work.
The scan usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on what your doctor is looking for. You'll need to lie still, and sometimes you'll be asked to hold your breath for short periods while images are taken.
Yes, it’s very safe for most people. It doesn’t use radiation, and the contrast dye used is typically well tolerated. However, if you have certain metal implants or devices (like pacemakers), tell the Radiographer and they’ll check if it’s safe for you to have the scan.
