How can the Yorkshire Pain Clinic help?

What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is a condition where pain persists longer than three months and can significantly reduce function, quality of life, and wellbeing.

Studies estimate that around 43% of people suffer from chronic pain. Living with chronic pain can cause problems with friends, work, mood, and employment.

Chronic pain can be a consequence of illness, trauma, surgery, degeneration, cancer, and medication. However, sometimes there’s no cause. Pain can be mechanical, nerve, or a mix of both. Mechanical pain is associated with wear and tear, such as knee pain. Nerve pain is often characterised as shooting or burning and is caused by injury to the nerve, for example, sciatica.

What is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest in the body, running from the base of the spine and branching down each leg. Sciatica is a lower back or buttock pain that moves down the legs. It can also cause numbness or weakness in the leg, toes, and feet.

Irritation or compression to the spinal nerve root causes the pain. Reasons can include a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy, cancer, and nerve disorders.

It’s a common issue affecting between 13% and 40% of people in their lifetime. Generally, sciatica gets better on its own. However, for some people, it lasts a long time or persistently returns. If epidural injections don’t work to ease the pain, surgery may be an option. At Living Care, our team can arrange an MRI and discuss surgical options.
