What happens during my initial appointment?

As part of our evaluations, we will ensure that any serious causes of your headache disorder are ruled out. Some of these secondary or symptomatic causes include conditions such as strokes, aneurysms, tumors, infections and inflammation. These can usually be ruled out after a careful clinical history and examination. We may then support this with specialised imaging techniques such as Brain Magnetic Resonance scans (Brain MRI scan). This can be arranged for you at another date. Once we have established that there are no sinister cause for your headache, our aim is to accurately diagnose and classify your underlying headache disorder. Once we have established a correct diagnosis, the next step is to develop a management plan for your specific headache disorder. This includes: 1) Education about what we know about your headache disorder 2) Potential triggers that may be worsening the headache problem 3) Discussion about your treatment options

What treatment is available?

We may need to prescribe daily medications to reduce your headache frequency and severity. More importantly, conventional painkillers sold over-the-counter, particularly opiates such as codeine containing tablets, may aggravate your headaches and could interfere with preventative medications. We will ensure to wean you off of these medications and establish a preventative approach that can allow you to become headache-free. In addition to this preventative approach, we have expertise on managing headaches acutely. This will require developing an effective treatment plan that will quickly stop your headache when it begins. If this approach fails, patients will have the option of coming into our clinic for an urgent appointment. Treatments include:

  • Intramuscular injections of anti-inflammatories
  • Anti-nausea medication
  • Trigeminal and occipital nerve blocks
The latter involve injections around nerve endings that supply the head, face and scalp. Injections of local anesthetic in these regions may lead to complete resolution of a severe headache.
